Twitter allows you to communicate with your customers just like Facebook except it uses a short message format that allows you to send out messages (tweets) up to 140 characters long to people who subscribe to you known as your followers.

Your tweets can include a link to any web content (blog post, website page, PDF document, etc.) or a photograph or video. Adding an image to a tweet greatly expands what you can share to beyond the 140-character limit for tweets.

A Few Simple Steps To Create A Business Twitter Page

Step #1:  Create a Twitter Account.  To begin setting up your business page for Twitter, simply go to www.twitter.com and click on the Sign Up button in the top right section of the page.  Complete the form and create a username, usually your business name, to be the name for your page.  Not all names will be available, so choose something close to your actual business name in this case.  The business page is set up the same way as your business page, only the details should all be about your business and not yourself.

Step #2:  Complete all necessary areas on your new Twitter page.  There are five main parts to a Twitter profile each one designed to reflect your best content and images to showcase your message accurately.

  • #1 – Username: The username you choose should reflect your business name or, if already taken, something close to your business name.  Your name is permitted up to 15 characters and make it easy for people to find your business.
  • #2 – Profile Photo:  It is recommended that you use your company logo or an image that specifically represents your business on an ongoing basis.  This image not only appears on your page, but is the icon next to your username when you tweet.
  • #3 – Your Company Bio:  You have 160 characters to let people know what makes your account special, and why they should follow you. Include useful information, such as what you tend to Tweet about, your location or business hours, and a link to your website.
  • #4 – Your Header Image:  Think of this as your billboard to the Twitter world.  Here you can use event photos, product photos, promotional information/images, or use it to announce new sales and promotions you are currently running for your business.  This is similar to the Facebook header image.
  • #5 – Pinned Tweet: Always pin your most important or latest news tweet to the top of your feed.  This makes it easier for your visitors to find what’s new without having to scroll through your whole page.  Simply click on the “more” option on the tweet you want to pin and select “Pin to your profile page.”

 

Step #3:  Begin to follow people and other businesses.  Follow news, businesses and people that relate to your business.  For example, if you are an ice cream shop, you may want to follow the latest ice cream flavors or Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.  To follow a page you like, simply click the Follow button in the top right of the page.

 

Step #4:  Know when someone comments or tweets to you.  Set up notifications on your smart phone.  When you download the Twitter app, you should be prompted to turn on Push Notifications.  This is a good idea to do so that you can reply to tweets as they are arriving to your Twitter Feed.  Customers like quick responses and Twitter provides this capability.  You will be notified when:

  • Someone mentions you
  • Someone retweets or favorites a tweet you sent
  • You get a new follower
  • Someone sends you a direct message

Step #5:  When tweeting, include photos and videos in your tweets.  You are able to add videos to Twitter however you are not able to add hem directly from Twitter.  You must first upload them to another service such as YouTube.  The last six videos/photos you add to your Twitter page will appear on your main page on the left hand side.
